Reach Forward Extended Scope Mounts

Reach forward / extended scope mounts

Scope rings which allow eye relief to be increased or reduced are referred to as reach forward or extended mounts or sometimes cantilever scope mounts.  They are normally required when a particularly long or short rifle scope is being mounted or when a rifle has an unusually short receiver.  The extended ring is normally positioned in front of the loading port meaning the scope can be moved forward which increases eye relief.  Hawke optics range of products includes a range of compact rifle scopes as well as longer target style scopes and these type of scopes sometimes require extended scope mounts.  It is less common for the extended scope ring to be mounted at the rear of the loading port but this is sometimes required for shorter compact rifle scopes.

What is the best type of extended scope mount ?

Extended or reach forward scope mounts are available in 1 and 2 piece designs.  The 1 piece models are often called cantilever mounts and can be used on spring powered airguns or bolt action rifles with a raised single piece rail, this allows empty cartridge cases to be extracted without fouling the mount.  Normally for this type of rifle a 2 piece extended mount is a better option and save the need to buy a rail.

How do I know which model of extended scope mount to buy ?

Just like buying any scope mount you firstly need to know the diameter of your scopes body tube.  The most common sizes are 1” (25mm), 30mm and increasingly 34mm.  Then the height, reach forward rings are normally available in medium and high.  The medium option normally clears upto a 45mm lens diameter and the high versions normally upto 56mm.  Another aspect to consider is how much additional eye relief do you require ?  Normally an increase of 25mm (1”) is sufficient and models with this amount of offset are widely available.  Then are you mounting your scope to a dovetail or Picatinny rail?  There are models on the market for both types of rail and even for the wider than standard dovetails found on centrefire rifles such as the Tikka T3x,  CZ527 and CZ550 etc.

How do I know if I need a reach forward scope mount ?

Once you have purchased your rifle and scope you can hold your scope approximately where it needs to be to obtain a comfortable head position and a full field of view.  Then lay the rifle on its side and lay the scope next to it in the correct position.  You can then see if there is a section of dovetail or picatinny rail below the scope.  If there isn’t you will need an extended scope mount.

Which scopes need an extended scope mount ?

Most of the popular rifle scope manufacturers offer a wide range of models for different budgets and different types of shooting.  Hawke optics, Nikko Sterling and Leupold all offer a compact range of scopes as well as longer higher magnifications models.  These scopes with a longer than average tube length and therefore overall length and shorter than average models are the ones most likely to need a reach forward or reach back scope mount.

Height of Scope Mount Required

In each product catergory we state a maximum (upto) objective lens diameter dimension. Due to both rifle and scope designs varying this can only be used as a guide. If you are unsure that the height of the Sportsmatch scope mount you have chosen will be sufficient to clear your rifle scopes objective lens from the barrel of your rifle, we suggest (prior to purchase) you check. The way you calculate the clearance is by halving the overall outside diameter of your rifle scopes objective lens and then deducting half the rifle scopes body tube diameter. For scopes with a 1″ inch diameter body tube diameter this would mean deducting 12.7mm, 15mm for scopes with a 30mm diameter body tube and 17mm for 34mm scopes. This dimension then gives the figure comparible with the ‘A’ dimension that is shown below. The amount our ‘A’ dimension is greater than the figure you have calculated is the amount of clearance your scopes objective lens will be clear of your rifles barrel (dont forget to allow around 2mm for the scope covers). Calculating your rifle scopes clearance in this way does assume your dovetail or Picatinny rail is not raised above or below your rifles barrel. Please consider that rifles with grooved receivers such as some models of airgun and .22 rimfire rifle will mean the scope sits lower than a rifle with a raised dovetail or Picatinny base fitted. Something else to consider is that some rifles with a high or adjustable cheek pieces may require high or extra scope mounts so that your eye is in line with the rifle scope and your head is kept in an upright comfortable position.
